Journaling to Heal
At a transformational stage in my life, my notebook called my name. My heart was broken, I was financially challenged, jobless and homeless. Fairly new to the city, luckily a childhood friend Grace (of course her name is Grace) invited me to stay with her until I found a new living arrangement. I felt very lost, confused and deeply distraught as to where my life was headed. In a downward spiral a convenient synchronicity landed before me; another friend gifted me with a book called “You Can Heal Your Life.” Befriending the pages taught me that the key to freedom is forgiveness. It began with one person…then my parents and most importantly, myself. My life miraculously changed for the better as I gave myself permission to live.
To forgive is to love yourself enough to let grievances go. It is a decision and a process. It may not happen over night but ask yourself what is more important—to be bitter or better? When the heart holds resentment, the mind is rigid and the ego wins. The ego is tricky, as it wants to be right and fights against what the heart really wants… Emotional freedom, joy and inner peace.
I used what I call the Three P Healing System to get to the core roots of where the pain stemmed from. A therapeutic practice I discovered the simplest solution—the same practice I did as a child and teenager. My inner guidance flooded words into my journal with Paper, Pen and Prayer. If you feel offputting praying, know that a prayer is like a wish. A sincere intention from the heart; and as that wish is received by the universe it begins fruition. The result of this process manifested into my own book Prayerful Awakening.
My wish for you today as you read these words are that you choose a reliable source to move forward. Journaling for both males and females has a tremendous effect on your well-being. So I am here as your invisible chaperon on your ‘Date with your Diary’ (I know that sounds girly). Guys…your computer chum, paper pal… iPad, scribbling on a napkin (kidding) — I invite you to write!
Journaling for Fun
I find that nature is one of the most inspiring environments to write. You are surrounded by living breathing trees, green grass, beautiful scenery and lush landscapes. Even where I grew up, where winter was the dominant season I could find solace in silence staring out a frosty window. Find your comfort spot and let your subconscious take you on a journey.
When we force words with our minds there is a disconnect with our hearts. Allow the words to flow like a steam of water moving in a fluid motion. A flower blooms when it is meant to in perfect time. The more you allow words to unfold, magic takes precedence over the inner critique that is trying to perfect and judge every sentence. They say the best writers are rewriters so it doesn’t matter what
shows up at the beginning. It’s not about being the ‘best’ — it’s about being in the moment and enjoying the process along the way… I hope to continue to guide you on your journaling journey. For more tips sign up for my Journey Vision Blog.
